This Christmas gift was causing a lot of trouble at the North Pole, so Santa dropped him off five days early. He just arrived tonight. According to which family member you ask, his name is Rahul, Hugo, Chris, or Thomas the Train. And he is half Lab, quarter Boxer, and quarter Pointer.
Santa has been working hard to convince Amber it was time for a puppy. (He is better-looking than Amber expected, but worse-smelling. Time for a bath, little Hugo.) He is also petrified of Danny. But Kate reassured him, "You'll get used to Danny by and by." Truely, she speaks from experience, though we don't know where she learned to say "by and by."
We could use some puppy-raising advice, so leave us some pointers (pun intended).
It sure looks like Santa made the kids happy. What a cute puppy. When you said, "He is better looking looking than Amber expected but worse-smelling" I thought you were talking about Santa still ;)

He's a cutie! Okay, my advice growing up with 3 very different dogs...don't ever feed him table scraps. They puke enough on the carpet from just their dog food, best to just hide any food at all within dog reachability. One of our dogs who was more persistent in finding table scraps died from diabetes. If at all possible, get them used to being friendly with other animals now (aka kitties). Our dog that wasn't ended up taking a leg of my best friend's cat next door who became doomed to the name "tripod". At some point you'll likely decide whether he's an outside or inside dog. It's a hard line because inside, of course, becomes messy very quickly, but if he's an outside dog, the chances of the kids playing with him become slim in the cold weather, and then he gets lonely :( It's good that he's a puppy now in the winter so it's more realistic to keep him indoors. Last, I'd recommend avoiding real "people" names if possible; one of my good friends had a dog named Cherie (spelled just like mine), another had a dog named Suzie (my mom's name)and I've also met a dog named Sharon. Not the best ice breaker when you have company over..."hey, that's my dog's name too!" :)

The puppy is darling! Sorry he/she was stinky. Just wait until Hugo starts rolling in "stuff"
ReplyDeleteMy advice is to go to dog training school. It will be worth it!!! Consistancy is very important and remember that dogs have very tiny bladders, so plan on letting it out every 2 hours. Remember those nights you stayed up with the newborns....
The comments about babies from Kate and Danny gave me a good chuckle this morning.

ReplyDeleteho ho ho. I wondered if you'd notice. Don't worry, it wasn't a matter of resemblance. That was Kate's name idea. Maybe she just likes you. She does like the puppy...so... If you must know, we compromised, and when people ask Kate what her dog's name is, she tells them Hugo Christopher Fawson. (When I say compromised I mean we went with my and Kate's idea and forgoed Brent and Danny's. Guess that's not really a compromise.)
